Sr. Juanita Marie Cruz, O.P.
Dominican Sister Juanita Marie Cruz, who taught at Oakland’s St. Elizabeth High School from 1972-1979, died Jan. 9 at the Dominican Motherhouse in Fremont after a lengthy illness. She was 84.

Born in Vallejo, she attended elementary and high school in Vallejo and Dominican College in San Rafael before joining the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in 1956. She made her first profession in 1958 and began teaching the next year.

Besides St. Elizabeth’s, she taught at schools in San Francisco, Portland, Los Angeles and Flintridge. She moved to the Motherhouse in 2001.
Survivors include her sister, Priscilla Cruz of Guam, and family members in southern California and Guam.

The funeral Mass was held Jan. 13 in the Mission San Jose Chapel in Fremont; internment took place the following day. Memorials may be made to the Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund, 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539.

Br. Harry Morgan, F.S.C.
Christian Brother Harry Morgan, who worked at schools administered by his religious community in Moraga, Berkeley and Concord, died Jan. 15. He was 76 and had been a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools for nearly 60 years.

Born in San Francisco, he entered the Christian Brothers’ novitiate in 1947. He was a teacher at St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley from 1951 – 1955 and again from 1960 – 1961.

He also worked as a teacher and counselor at De La Salle High School in Concord in the late 1970s. He served as an aide at St. Mary’s College in Moraga from 1956 – 1957.

For the last 22 years Brother Morgan, also known as Brother Gary, devoted his life to a rehabilitation program he founded called Vaugirard, a San Francisco-based center that provides spiritual care to substance abusers who are in recovery.

A funeral Mass will be held today (Jan. 24) at Corpus Christi Church in San Francisco. A memorial Mass follows at the Chapel of the Christian Brothers’ Monastery in Napa. Burial will be at the Brothers’ Cemetery in Napa. Memorial donations may be made to The Grace and Harry Morgan Fund, P.O. Box 3720, Napa, CA 94558-0372.
