New collaboration offers cathedral music offerings

The Cathedral of Christ the Light, 2121 Harrison St., Oakland, is entering into a partnership with Oakland's Pacific Boychoir Academy, which will enrich the cathedral music offerings.

"Our partnership with Pacific Boychoir Academy enables us to have boy sopranos on certain dates," said Rudy de Vos, director of music at the cathedral.

Rudy de Vos

He said he hopes the first collaboration will be for the All Souls Day Mass on Nov. 2.

He looks forward, too, to their participation in the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass.

Such a collaboration is rooted in history. "A choir of men and boys dates back centuries," de Vos said.

The Pacific Boychoir Academy was founded in Oakland in 1998, as an after school choral program. In 2004, the academy opened a school, fourth through eighth grade, for boys.

The new collaboration makes way for the establishment of four new choirs at the cathedral. They are:

• The Cathedral Men's Schola, which consists of auditioned professional and volunteer singers, including alumni of the Pacific Boychoir Academy. This group will form the foundation for two other choirs at the cathedral: The Cathedral Choir of Men & Boys and The Cathedral Camerata.

• The Cathedral Choir of Men & Boys will sing occasionally at the 10 a.m. Mass on Sundays, and on various Holy Days and other liturgical celebrations, such as Chrism Mass and Ordinations. The boy sopranos are drawn from the Pacific Boychoir Academy.

• The Cathedral Camerata, a semi-professional ensemble that combines the Men's Schola with women sopranos, will sing occasionally at the 10 a.m. Sunday Mass from September through June, in addition to other liturgical celebrations.

• The St. Hildegard Schola, an ensemble of women and girls age 10 and up, will sing at the 5:30 p.m. Vigil Mass (Saturdays) and for various other liturgical celebrations. This choir will begin at the end of September.

For information on how to audition for any of the choirs, contact de Vos at 510-496-7227 or rdevos@oakdiocese.org.
