Youth retreats aim to 'get you closer to Christ'

Welcome to the Summer of Retreat.

That's the invitation offered to 18- to 35-year-olds by Steven Lewis, coordinator of young adults and evangelization in the Diocese of Oakland.

"Last year, we had a successful Hearts on Fire retreat," Lewis said.

Fifty young adults converged on Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Oakland.

But many more, he said, couldn't make it that weekend.

So this summer, Lewis decided he would plan or promote a retreat each month. He worked with organizations with which he was familiar. "I trust where they're coming from," he said.

He also chose various topics, locations, days of the week, time of day and price points, in an effort to offer as many options as possible for the busy young adults.

Each is planned, he tells viewers of his lively video invitation at www.summerofretreats.org, "to get you closer to Christ."

He encourages those who have not been on a retreat since high school — or who have never been on a retreat at all — to take a look at the offerings, which include service mission, a Eucharist-centered retreat, and a time with one of the religious orders active in the diocese.

"All I'm asking is for you to pick one," he tells viewers.

On the calendar:

Aug. 25-27: Dominican Retreat: Encounter Christ, at St. Albert's Priory in Oakland.

Sept. 28-Oct. 1: Caritas 48: Discover. Love. Anew. in Citrus Heights.
