The CYO Sand Volleyball Champions: St. Philip Neri Eighth Grade boys.
PAULA GARCIA/SPECIAL TO THE CATHOLIC VOICE

26 teams participate in CYO Boys Sand Vollyball

Each spring, CYO players dive into white sand while passing, setting, serving and spiking a volleyball in the Boys' CYO Sand Volleyball league. Capturing the spirit of the play, the league motto is "Fun in the Sun and Sand!"

Teams in Fifth through Eighth grades from Catholic schools and parishes around the Diocese of Oakland played on six Sunday afternoons at Quarry Lakes Regional Park, Fremont. While the teams played, families of the players watched and picnicked, creating a casual and fun atmosphere. This past season, 26 teams participated.

At the conclusion to the season, all teams were invited to participate in a two-day tournament in late May.

This year's tournament featured back-to-back champions in each of the returning grades.

In Eighth Grade competition, St. Philip Neri, Alameda won over St. Bede, Hayward, 25-13. The team from St. Philip Neri has been the league champion each year since the Fifth Grade.

Other repeating champions were Seventh Grade Assumption, San Leandro, and Sixth Grade St. Joseph, Alameda. The Fifth Grade also crowned a team from Assumption as its champion. For the first time, teams from St. Bede and All Saints, Hayward, participated in sand volleyball with St. Bede securing the Runner-up spot in the Eighth Grade and All Saints as the Runner-up in the Fifth Grade.

Tournament results:

Eighth Grade
