'Support our people' bishop tells new priests

Two transitional deacons, Matthew Murray and Oscar Rojas, were ordained to the priesthood at Mass the evening of May 26 at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland.

"We choose these for the order of the priesthood," said Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, as Massgoers clapped in approval.

"The priesthood is not given to you for your benefit," the bishop said, "but given to you for the benefit of others."

He charged them "to support our people with prayer, the sacraments and your loving presence as they carry their crosses through life."

At the beginning of the Mass, Bishop Barber thanked Emeritus Bishop John S. Cummins, for his 40 years as a bishop giving "consistent, loving support" for vocations.

And Bishop Barber welcomed Bishop Elias Samuel Bolaños Avelar, SDB, Bishop of Zacatecoluca, El Salvador, mentor to the new Father Rojas, in Spanish.

And he thanked the families, friends and clergy who supported the two men on their way to becoming priests.
