Humanitarian award
James Noe, second from left, was named the 2017 MLK Humanitarian of the Year by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors. Noe, a St. Vincent de Paul of Contra Costa County volunteer for more than 30 years, was honored Jan. 17 for his lasting impact as an advocate for the underprivileged. At the award ceremony, from left, are Supervisor John Gioia; Noe; and Supervisors Federal Glover; Candace Andersen; Karen Mitchoff; and Diane Burgis. Noe was nominated for the award by St. Vincent de Paul of Contra Costa County, where he has served as a board member and as board president. Noe's collaborative approach to problem-solving is illustrated in partnerships St. Vincent de Paul forged in creating the St. Vincent de Paul Free Dining Room and the RotaCare Pittsburg Free Medical Clinic at SVdP. Noe's volunteer commitment to people in need began in his own home, when in 1975, his family hosted Vietnamese refugees for more than a year. He is a parishioner at St. Joan of Arc Church in San Ramon.
