School honors veterans
The student body at St. Joseph School in Pinole, with the Pinole Historical Society and the City of Pinole, honored veterans at Fernandez Park on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Choir members sang "God Bless America" and "Grand Ol' Flag" and the Cub and Boy scouts participated in the annual Flag Retirement ceremony, above. Pupils were encouraged to personally thank veterans they encountered. Pictured with choir members, right, are Kathy Brunstein, eighth grade teacher, Pinole Mayor Roy Sweringen, former Pinole Mayor Jack Meehan, Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Napa, and Pinole Historical Society President Jeff Rubin. St. Joseph has participated in Veterans Day since 2003, said Brunstein, who also serves as vice principal: "St. Joseph School was the only school in the diocese that was in session that day. As a school community, we pride ourselves in passing on the importance of recognizing the service to all who have served our country."

Ministry of presence
Rev. Brian Joyce, retired chancellor of the Diocese of Oakland and pastor for 26½ years at Christ the King Parish in Pleasant Hill, recently appeared as part of a Ministry of Presence in Oakland's Ceasefire, a weekly project to call for less violence in the city of Oakland. Each Friday night, members of a variety of East Oakland churches — including St. Benedict Parish and Allen Temple Baptist Church — join in a weekly demonstration calling for peace in the streets of East Oakland. This four-year-old weekly ministry, organized by Oakland Community Organization, invites additional participants. Contact Rev. Damita Davis-Howard at ddavis-howard@
