Third through Fifth Grade girls at the Diocesan Meet at Joaquin Miller Park.
DIANE CHAVEZ/SPECIAL TO THE CATHOLIC VOICE

900 youths participate in rugged cross country race

Nine-hundred young CYO runners crossed the finish line to be greeted by cheering families as the CYO Cross Country season concluded with the annual Diocesan Championship Meet in October at Joaquin Miller Park, Oakland.

The rugged race through the woods featured a steep uphill climb as runners from Third through Eighth grades, both girls and boys, pushed for individual medals and team awards over the mile course. In a special division, runners from Kindergarten through Second Grade ran a half-mile race.

All participating runners were invited to participate in the Diocesan Championship Meet. As with all CYO events, the meet began with a prayer with the runners and their families. There were then six races in individual age groups. The meet concluded with a gathering of runners and families for a closing prayer and an awards ceremony as darkness fell over the park.

Each year, the CYO Cross Country season features five weeks of running on Friday afternoons in late September and early October. Race venues are in parks around the East Bay. In addition to the Joaquin Miller Park site, meets are at Crown Beach, Alameda; Oak Hill Park, Danville; Garin Park, Hayward; and Shadow Cliffs Park, Pleasanton. Courses featured paths through woods, races along sandy beaches and sprints over flat, grassy areas for mile and half-mile runs. CYO Cross Country teams are from parishes and Catholic schools, this year representing 41 parishes and schools in the diocese.

CYO Cross Country is a fast-growing sport, with increasing numbers of runners and with new parishes participating each season. At the meets, all runners, fast ones as well as those who finish further back in the pack, are greeted at the finish line and along the course by cheering, enthusiastic family members. The sport offers a sense of accomplishment for completing a mile race, running in a natural park setting, getting in shape, hanging out with friends before and after races, spending time with supportive families and often beginning the weekend with pizza.
