Cathedral volunteers praised for their efforts
More than 100 volunteers from the ministries of the Cathedral of Christ the Light gathered there for the 12:10 p.m. Mass Sept. 30, the feast of St. Jerome, followed by a luncheon in the parish hall.
"We're celebrating all our cathedral volunteers," Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, said in welcoming remarks at the beginning of Mass. "Thank God for your generosity and service." He asked God to bless them.
Bishop Barber was joined on the altar by the Very Rev. James V. Matthews, rector of the cathedral, and Revs. Bich Nguyen and Alfonso Borgen, OFM Conv., parochial vicars.
Lectors, counters, servers, deacons and those who serve the poor were among the attendees.
Jaime Jimenez serves as a lector and as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the cathedral. He used to serve at Old St. Mary's, he said, and when that parish became part of the cathedral parish, he made the move.
At the 7 a.m. Mass every Tuesday, you will find Charlie Beningo serving. "Once in a while" on a Sunday, he added.
Cecilia Lam has served in parishes for 20 years; she is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the 10 a.m. Sunday Mass.
"Big or little, we go to church," she said.
At the luncheon, both the bishop and Father Matthews thanked the volunteers for being the face of the cathedral to all who come there.
