Blessing of the animals, 2016

The Blessing of the Animals, which is held on or near the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi (Oct. 4), will take place at various schools and parishes in the Diocese of Oakland.

St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most celebrated saints in the Catholic Church, is the patron saint of animals and the environment. The following venues responded to our request for the time and date of their blessing. Check first with your own parish and school to see if one is being held closer to you.

Thursday, Sept. 29
2:30 p.m., in the schoolyard at St. Joseph Elementary School, 1910 San Antonio Ave., Alameda.

Saturday, Oct. 1
9 a.m. at St. Michael Church, 458 Maple St., in the back parking lot by the Youth Portable, in Livermore.

10 a.m. at St. John Vianney Parish, in Commons Courtyard, 1650 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek

10 a.m. on the front lawn plaza of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 500 Fairview Ave., Brentwood.

11 a.m. at St. Leo Church, 176 Ridgeway St., Oakland.

1 p.m. in the gathering space at St. Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut St., Alameda..

2 p.m. at San Damiano Retreat, 710 Highland Drive, Danville. "We may even bless a few humans."

Sunday, Oct. 2
After the 10 a.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Church, 4025 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland.

1:30 p.m. in front of St. Patrick School, 907 Seventh St., Rodeo.

After the 12:30 p.m. Mass at St. Jarlath Parish/School, 2620 Pleasant St., Oakland.

1:30 p.m. in front of St. Joan of Arc Church (statue side), 2601 San Ramon Valley Blvd., San Ramon.

3 p.m. in St. Francis Plaza at Holy Spirit Parish, 37588 Fremont Blvd., Fremont.

Tuesday, Oct. 4
8 a.m. (during the morning school assembly) on the plaza in front of St. Raymond Church, 11555 Shannon Ave., Dublin. Deacon Bill Henderson is scheduled to conduct the blessing.

8:10 a.m. at the school assembly in the school yard, St. Theresa Church, 30 Mandalay Road, Oakland.

8:35 a.m. (after the 8 a.m. Mass) in the courtyard next to St. Anne Church, 1600 Rossmoor Parkway, Walnut Creek.

Saturday, Nov. 5 (in honor of St. Martin de Porres)
1 p.m. sharp in the parish lawn area at Most Holy Rosary Church, 1313 A St., Antioch. All pets should be leashed or in crates for safety.
