Rain doesn't stop annual Volleyball Tournament

A record 27 teams participated in the Diocese of Oakland's Boys' CYO Sand Volleyball league year-end tournament.

The tournament motto is "Fun in the Sun and Sand." This year, the season not only included sun and sand but also rain and wind, as the tournament was partially rained out. Play was postponed only for several weeks during the May and June event, which featured a family atmosphere as well as exciting and skilled volleyball play.

The Boys' CYO Sand Volleyball season begins each April with matches played weekly until a season-ending tournament in May. No standings are kept during the season and all participating teams are invited to play in the tournament.

Matches are at Quarry Lakes Regional Park, Fremont. on Sunday afternoons. While the teams play, families of the players watch and picnic, creating a casual and fun atmosphere.

Results of the year-end tournament were:

Eighth Grade
Champion, St. Elizabeth 2, Oakland;
Runner-up, St. Anthony, Oakland

Seventh Grade
Champion, St. Philip Neri, Alameda;
Runner-up, St. Anthony, Oakland

Sixth Grade
Champion — Assumption, San Leandro;
Runner-up — St. Philip Neri 2, Alameda

Fifth Grade
Champion, St. Joseph 1, Alameda
Runner-up, St. Philip Neri 1, Alameda
