In Sunday best, traditional costumes and occasionally with a veil adorning a gray-haired head, the years seem to melt away as brides and bridegroom from 1991 — and before — are invited to the Cathedral of Christ the Light for the Wedding Anniversary Celebration Oct. 2.

Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, will celebrate 10 a.m. Mass, at which the couples, who have been married 25 years or more, will be blessed.

The Mass will be followed by a reception in the Cathedral Event Center, during which the married couples will have the opportunity to take a photo with the bishop, and enjoy refreshments. A slideshow of wedding photos provided in advance by the celebrating couples will play throughout the reception.

The wedding anniversary celebrations, which, like the San Francisco Giants World Series victories, have been celebrated in the last three even-numbered years, offer an opportunity to acknowledge the people who model marriage, not only in their extended families but in their parishes and the community at large.

The long-married couples, said Mimi Streett, diocesan coordinator of marriage and family life, "are the living examples of 'Amoris Laetitia,' Pope Francis' apostolic exhortation on love in the family.

Married couples must register in advance to participate in the anniversary Mass at www.oakdiocese.org/anniversary or by dialing 510-267-8395. There is a $20 registration fee per couple, and a $10 fee for each additional reception guest, age 16 and over.
