St. Martin de Porres graduate awarded
Roger Warrick Scholarship
Jose Fuentes, who graduated from Oakland's St. Martin de Porres Regional School, was awarded May 28 a $1,000 Roger Warrick Scholarship. He becomes the third scholarship recipient and first member from St. Patrick Parish, Oakland, to win this honor.
The Roger Warrick Scholarship is awarded by St. Patrick's to a Latino or African American graduate of St. Martin School who is making a positive change in his life through education and a healthy lifestyle and intends to continue his education after graduation.
In nominating Jose for the scholarship, school administrators at St. Martin de Porres cited his academic excellence and noted that the young man had, for the past year, served as student body president. Fuentes, who serves as an altar server at St. Patrick Church, will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, on July 1. This fall Fuentes will attend Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward.
Roger Warrick was a parishioner at St. Patrick Church who was tragically killed on Aug. 2, 2013, a victim of gun violence. He was 20. He is fondly remembered as a young African American man who enjoyed life, had "a heart of gold" and a smile "that won many hearts," according to information from the parish.
