Easter protest arrests
The annual Good Friday anti-nuclear protest took place outside the Lawrence Livermore laboratories and about 40 people were arrested. Some clergy were arrested, cited and released at the site, including Rev. Brian Joyce, a retired priest of the Diocese of Oakland. "It took about an hour," said Father Joyce of the process after the arrest. The former diocesan chancellor and longtime pastor was determined to participate in the protest this year as he did last year despite having limited mobility due to Parkinson's Disease. Local law enforcement officers have adapted their procedures to accommodate those who are disabled. For Father Joyce that meant he was able to remain standing while praying instead of getting on his knees. "If I kneel down I might not be able to get back up," he said.
