St. Joseph in Alameda
celebrates 130 years

More than 300 people filled St. Joseph Basilica in Alameda as it celebrated its 130th anniversary as a parish on March 19, the feast of St. Joseph. A dozen priests, led by Very Rev. George Mockel, vicar general of the Diocese of Oakland, joined in the celebration beginning with a Mass of Thanksgiving followed by an international food fair in the parish hall. Rev. Patrick Goodwin, SSCC, pastor from 1983-1993, received a standing ovation when introduced. The parish received an apostolic blessing from Pope Francis and recognition from the city of Alameda. Renowned opera singer and parishioner Frederica von Stade sang the prelude and a solo. At the festival afterward, people in ethnic dress offered up food from many countries, including Germany, India, Italy, The Philippines and Vietnam. In a letter to parishioners, Father Alengadan wrote, "My heart is filled with gratitude for the lovely celebration of our parish's 130th anniversary. Everyone was impressed and touched by the lively and inspiring liturgy, and many were moved to tears. … The lunch afterwards with its international food fair was a tremendous example of so many people coming together. Thanks to all … God has blessed us since this parish's founding. I can't wait to see what the next 130 years will bring ..."
