CYO basketball features exciting final games

The 2016 Boys' CYO Basketball Playoffs concluded with exciting final games, especially for the Eighth Grade championships.
The annual event for Catholic Youth Organization boys' basketball teams in the Oakland diocese featured "Curry-like" outside shooting, intense post play and strong defenses. In the eight returning divisions, there were three back-to-back champions — St. Joseph, Pinole, and St. Perpetua. Lafayette, in the Fifth Grade "A" and "AA" divisions with Assumption, San Leandro, repeating in the Seventh Grade "AA" division.
In the Eighth Grade "AA" division, St. John the Baptist, San Lorenzo, captured the championship over St. Leander, San Leandro, 69-63. Both teams were from the Southern Alameda County (SAC) CYO League with the St. Leander team the defending diocesan champions.
Both teams were evenly matched as they split wins against each other during their league season and St. Leander won the league playoff.
The diocesan championship was a seesaw game with St. Leander ahead at the end of the 3rd quarter, 46-39. St. John's then tied the game with 1:46 left in the game, outscoring St. Leander in the 4th quarter, 30-17 for the victory. Leading St. John in the 4th quarter were Damien Warren and Nate Steele each scoring 10 points and Brajon Thompson shooting 8 for 8 from the free-throw line. Thompson was the high scorer for St. John's with 23 points and Ausar Mosiah led St. Leander with 30 points.
In the 8th grade "A" division, St. Martin de Porres, Oakland, won the championship over St. Anne, Union City, 57-53. St. Martin was ahead for most of the game and led at the end of the 3rd quarter, 46-28. St. Anne then surged and cut the lead to 5, outscoring St. Martin 25 to 11 in the 4th quarter. St. Anne was unable to overtake as time ran out, giving St. Martin the victory. High scorer for St. Martin De Porres was David Woolridge with 20 points and Amado Soriano led St. Anne with 28.

Sixty-two boys' CYO basketball teams from around the Oakland Diocese competed in this 53rd annual playoff. The games were played in two weekends in February and March at St. Bede Parish, Hayward, St. Joachim Parish, Hayward and St. Elizabeth Parish, Oakland. Top teams from each of the six participating CYO leagues, in grades 4 through 8, qualified to enter playoffs. Playoffs are divided into two divisions, "A" and "AA", with the "AA" division for the larger leagues and parishes, and the "A" division for smaller leagues or Catholic school programs. There were over 1,500 teams and 10,000 players competing in CYO basketball this past season.
