2016 Celebration of Scouting

Fifty-two scouts, their leaders, families and friends joined in the annual Celebration of Scouting.
ALL: BILL FORD/SPECIAL TO THE CATHOLIC VOICE

Mission of service to others highlight of awards

Evelyn Sanchez, with Very Rev. Robert Herbst, OFM Conv., and Cub Scouts, Christian De La Torre, Francisco Sanchez and Alex Guzman-Contreras. Sanchez was recognized for her work in organizing scout units and promoting religious awards.

Fifty-two scouts and their scout leaders from the Oakland diocese processed in to the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland and were greeted by their families to begin the annual Celebration of Scouting on Feb. 6.

At the celebration, scouts from Girl Scout and Boy Scout programs received their religious awards at the prayer service that included readings from scripture, an awards presentation and concluded with the blessing of scouts and their leaders. Very Rev. Robert Herbst, OFM Conv., diocesan chancellor, led the scouts in prayer and presented their awards.

In keeping with the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the theme of the celebration was "Scouts Growing in Service to Others." Father Herbst reminded the scouts that a vital part of the scout program is service to others and gave them specific examples of how scout units contribute to the community with projects in each of the Church's Corporal Works of Mercy. He challenged the scouts to continue to serve others as scouts and as individual Catholics.

In addition to the religious awards, "Pillars of Faith" awards were presented to two scouts who had previously completed all four religious recognition awards during their years in scouts. The awardees were Alice Aufderheide and Charlotte Miranda, both from St. Michael Parish, Livermore.

There were three recipients of Adult Recognition Awards with their recognition strongly emphasizing service to others. Receiving the St. George Award for outstanding contributions in Catholic Boy Scout programs were Evelyn Sanchez from St. Joseph Parish, Pinole, and Philip Boken from St. Joseph Parish, Fremont. Receiving the St. Anne Award for outstanding contributions in Girl Scout programs was Monica Wong from St. Joseph Parish, Fremont. Sanchez was especially recognized for her work in organizing scout units and promoting religious awards in areas of the diocese underserved by scouting. Boken was recognized for his work as a religious awards counselor, organizing the "St. Peter Patrol" for scouts to earn their religious awards. Wong was recognized for her work with Girl Scouts, especially for centering her religious awards program around many outstanding service projects in the Church and community.

Scouts earn Catholic religious awards for their own age groups by completing requirements and service projects that explore the relationships between their faith and their daily lives as scouts. Awards are available for both Girl Scouts and for Boy Scouts at each age and scouts work with their own parents/guardians or with a scout religious awards counselor in completing the age-appropriate requirements.

In addition to the "Celebration of Scouting," many scouts in the diocese are honored each year in their own parishes by attending Mass as scouts on Scout Sunday. The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday on or before Scout Anniversary Day, Feb. 8, as Scout Sunday. This year, Boy Scout Sunday was Feb. 7. Girl Scouts USA designates Girl Scout Sunday to begin Girl Scout Week. This year, Girl Scout Sunday will be March 6.

The Oakland Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting, through the CYO Office, offers programs for scouts of Catholic faith. For more information about Catholic scout programs in the diocese visit the website; www.oakdiocesescouts.org or dial CYO at 510-893-5154.
