It took three separate Rite of Election ceremonies to accommodate the hundreds of new Catholics, their families and friends.

Diocese welcomes 550 adults into the Church

On the weekend of Feb. 13-14, hundreds of people who are seeking to join the Catholic Church gathered in three separate ceremonies at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland to participate in the Rite of Election, a significant step on their journey.

The adults preparing for baptism and the other rites of initiation arrived as catechumen.

They were joined by candidates, who may have been baptized in another Christian tradition, or may have been baptized Catholic but had not been confirmed, or, in some cases, ever received First Communion.

The Church will welcome them all — 550 strong — at the Easter Vigil, to be celebrated in parishes throughout the diocese on March 26.

The Catholic Voice is sharing the stories of three who are entering the Church, at Newman Hall, Holy Spirit Parish in Berkeley.

With Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, and their parochial administrator, Rev. Glenn Naguit, is the group from St. Margaret Mary, Oakland.
