Mass of Thanksgiving
in Newark

The Most Rev. Steven J. Lopes, of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at 10 a.m. March 6 at the parish of his childhood, St. Edward Church, 5788 Thornton Ave., Newark. Bishop Lopes, 40, is a graduate of St. Edward School and Moreau Catholic High School. He is the first bishop of the ordinariate, which was established by the Vatican in 2012 to serve former Anglicans living full communion with the Catholic Church. Cardinal Gerhard Muller, prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, and Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington were co-consecrators at Bishop Lopes' ordination and installation Mass Feb. 2 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston. The homilist was Cardinal William J. Levada, the retired head of the congregation, who, as archbishop of San Francisco, ordained the new bishop as a priest in 2001.
