Vailankanni festival coming up

The annual Our Lady of Vailankanni Festival will be celebrated Sept. 5 at St. James the Apostle Parish in Fremont, site of the shrine to Our Lady, who appeared three times in 16th-century India.

The shrine in Fremont was dedicated in 2010, and draws the faithful who leave behind flowers, candles and tokens day and night.

Mass and candlelight procession will be followed by dinner and entertainment.

The festival begins at 7 p.m. at the parish, 34700 Fremont Blvd., Fremont.

Information and dinner reservations are available at 408-506-4474 and by emailing Vailankanni.Novena@gmail.com.

A similar festival takes place at the Church of the Resurrection, 725 Cascade Drive, Sunnyvale, from 7-9:30 p.m. Sept. 5. There will be a rosary procession, Mass, fellowship and dinner. For more information, dial 408-480-0804 or visit www.vailankanni.shtcg.org.
