Some 30 parishes from the first part of the Diocese of Oakland's Capital Campaign are getting back about $600,000 in an initial distribution.

Part of the Capital Campaign's promise was that each parish would get back 25 percent of monies donated or pledged. To better manage the campaign, the diocese's 83 parishes were divided into two groups, about 30 in Block 1, whose main fundraising effort ran from September through December 2014, and most of the remaining parishes in Block 2, whose efforts continue.

About $32 million has been raised or pledged so far. Block 1 parishes raised 70 percent of their $25 million goal.

Paul Bongiovanni, diocesan chief financial officer, thanked the "generous and faithful parishioners" for their commitment and diligence in supporting the campaign.

Bongiovanni explained, "This initial distribution to each Block 1 parish reflects cash receipts received through Dec. 31, 2014, whether as one-time gifts or pledge payments."

Ken Hokenson, executive director of the Office for Mission Advancement, said the diocese will work with Block 1 parishes over the next few months on a second distribution reflecting money donated in the first half of 2015.

As final Block 1 commitments are met, there will be quarterly distributions to parishes.

In Block 2 so far, six parishes have exceeded their goal: Our Lady of Good Counsel, San Leandro; Queen of All Saints, Concord; Santa Maria, Orinda; and St. Jarlath, St. Margaret Mary, St. Anthony/Mary Help of Christians, all in Oakland. Two other parishes are above 90 percent of their goal: Church of the Good Shepherd, Pittsburg and Holy Spirit, Fremont.

You can still help
It's not to late to help your Church and its vital ministries. For more information about the Capital Campaign and how you can help, dial 510-893-4711 or visit www.reclaimtogether.org.

Hundreds of volunteers and thousands of contributors have already participated in the Diocese of Oakland's year-long Capital Campaign, Reclaiming Christ's Mission Together.

Hokenson said there is still time for those who wish to help their parish and the Church.

"The participation of everyone in the diocese is the key to success," he said.

The campaign raises money not only for parishes, he said, but for Catholic Charities, tuition assistance and priest retirement.
