HNU's spring youth concert to be May 9

OAKLAND — Holy Names University's Preparatory Music Department, a community school for young musicians, will host its Spring 2015 Youth Concerto Festival Concert at 3 p.m. May 9.

This concert features the winners of the Preparatory Music Concerto Competition. Outstanding young musicians perform works by Bach, Mozart, Grieg, and Vivaldi; directed by Steven Hofer with the HNU Orchestra accompanying. Preparatory Music youth string and piano ensemble classes will round out the program.

The concert will be in the Valley Center for the Performing Arts Regents' Theatre at Holy Names University, 3500 Mountain Blvd., Oakland. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors, students and children. Parking is free.

Preparatory Music, one of the first Suzuki centers on the West Coast, was founded in 1968 by Sister Therese-Cecile Murphy, a Holy Names College music professor and early advocate of Suzuki music education, which advocates in part teaching from a young age.
