St. Agnes wins first championship
Girls' CYO basketball teams from the Diablo East and West Diablo leagues recently met to conclude their season in the 15th annual Girls' CYO Basketball Playoffs for the eastern half of the Oakland diocese.
Thirty-two teams participated in the games for Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Eighth grades. Teams in the Seventh grade played in a league-sponsored tournament earlier in the season.
In the Eighth Grade final, St Agnes, Concord, returned to the finals and won that team's first diocesan championship, defeating three-time returning champion St. John Vianney, Walnut Creek, 34-24. St. Agnes led by only 3 points at the end of the third quarter 22-19, but opened it up in the fourth by outscoring SJV 12-5. High scorer was Dariana Mihalache for St. Agnes with 15 points. Macy Woodworth and Emily Howie each led scoring for SJV with 7 apiece.
In the Sixth grade, Good Shepherd, Pittsburg won the championship over Immaculate Heart of Mary, Brentwood, 35-28. Both Ja'Lani Battle and Kersten Larsen led Good Shepherd with 12 points each, while Ella Roberts from Immaculate Heart led her team with 9 points.
Results of the championship games were:
8th grade: St Agnes, Concord d. St. John Vianney, Walnut Creek, 34-24
6th grade: Good Shepherd, Pittsburg d. Immaculate Heart of Mary, Brentwood, 35-28
5th grade: St. John Vianney, Walnut Creek d. Christ the King, Pleasant Hill 24-18
4th grade: Immaculate Heart of Mary, Brentwood "B" d. St. Perpetua, Lafayette, 21-16
Finals were played at Holy Rosary Gym, Antioch, with first and second round games at Tice Valley Community Gym, Walnut Creek, Christ the King gym, Pleasant Hill, and St. Francis Gym, Concord.
Girls' CYO basketball teams from parishes in the western half of the diocese play in the spring, with playoffs for those teams to be held in May.
