Close games, upsets mark exciting playoffs

The 2015 Boys' CYO Basketball Playoffs featured many close contests and a number of upsets over last years' winners. New champions from last years' playoffs were crowned in seven of the eight returning divisions, with the only repeat winner from St. Leander parish, San Leandro in the Seventh Grade "AA" division.

The annual event for boys' CYO basketball teams in the diocese featured skilled basketball play with good coaching by dedicated volunteers playing in front of enthusiastic crowds.

In the Eighth Grade "AA" division, St. Mary's, Walnut Creek team, captured its first-time diocesan championship over Good Shepherd, Pittsburg, 56-41. St. Mary's was behind at the end of the third quarter, 37-36, but was in the lead in scoring in the final quarter by Brian Gregersen, who scored 9 points to seal the victory. He scored 11 points overall, with Brett Headley as the high scorer for St. Mary's with 13. Dariuss Robertson scored 16 points for Good Shepherd.

In the Eighth Grade "A" division, St. Joseph, Pinole, won the championship over Our Lady of Guadalupe, Fremont, 64-46. St. Joseph's game was highlighted by post-play from Adam Campos who scored 22. Desai Lopez and CJ Reed each scored 18 for Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was the first Eighth Grade championship for St. Joseph parish since 1985. St. Joseph parish also "doubled," by winning their first-ever Fourth Grade championship this year.

Championship games and scores in the "AA" division were:

8th grade: St. Mary, Walnut Creek, d. Good Shepherd, Pittsburg, 56-41

Sixty boys' CYO basketball teams from around the Oakland Diocese played in the 52nd annual playoff. The games were played in two weekends in February and March at St. Bede Parish, Hayward, St. Joachim Parish, Hayward, St. Elizabeth Parish, Oakland and St. Theresa Parish, Oakland.

The competing teams represented six participating leagues, with more than 1,000 teams and 10,000 players competing in CYO basketball this past season. There are two divisions in each grade level of playoffs, the "AA" division for the larger leagues and parishes, and the "A" division for smaller leagues or Catholic school programs.
