Young researchers compete at
middle school science fair

The Oakland Diocese Middle School Science Fair drew 135 student competitors from 28 diocesan schools to St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda on Feb. 7. Among the 34 judges were nine SJND alumni and SJND parents.

Three schools — St. Edward of Newark, St. Paul of San Pablo and St. Joseph Elementary of Alameda — rose to the top in overall number of awards.

Finalists in the competition will move on to compete at the Alameda County Science and Engineering Fair, the Contra Costa Science and Engineering Fair and the San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair.

The students, their school and winning project are:

Behavioral Sciences

Grand champion: Gianna Pisciotto, Eighth Grade, Queen of All Saints School, Concord, "Against the Grain."

Finalists: Christian Chavez, Seventh Grade, St. Felicitas School, San Leandro; Kirsten Bautista, Seventh Grade, St. John the Baptist School, El Cerrito.

Biological Sciences

Grand champion: Cristianna Watson, Eighth Grade, St. Edward School, Newark, "Put your money where your mouth is!"

Finalists: Ryan Sathianathen, Eighth Grade, Our Lady of Guadalupe School, Fremont; Simone Rezentes, Seventh Grade, St. Clement School, Hayward; Arianna Zaragoza, Seventh Grade, St. John the Baptist School, El Cerrito; Alexander Rudolf, Seventh Grade, St. Martin de Porres School, Oakland; Grace Sherwood, Eighth Grade, Christ the King School, Pleasant Hill; Vishnu Dhawan, Eighth Grade, St. Clement School, Hayward.

Environmental Sciences
