Chrism Mass on March 26

All parishes and members of the diocese are invited to celebrate the annual Chrism Mass at The Cathedral of Christ the Light, 2121 Harrison St., Oakland, beginning at 6:30 p.m. March 26.

Balsam and perfumes are added to the olive oil about a week before the Chrism Mass. Essential oils and fragrances include eucalyptus, cedar, rose, frankincense and myrrh.

Join Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, as he blesses the Oil of the Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick, and consecrates the Sacred Chrism, all of which are taken back to the parishes for the celebration of the sacraments.

In a sign of unity and fidelity, the priests of the diocese concelebrate the Mass with their bishop and recommit themselves to their priestly ministry.

In a special addition this year, a young man will be received as a candidate to study for the priesthood. The preparation of the oil which will be consecrated begins with olive oil, a gift of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. Balsam and perfumes are added to the olive oil about a week before the Chrism Mass. Essential oils and fragrances include eucalyptus, cedar, rose, frankincense and myrrh.

The celebration begins with the musical prelude and Procession of the Parishes. Parishes have been invited to send two parishioners to participate in the Mass: the first to represent the parish in the procession and the second to accompany the oils from the parish and to participate in the Procession of the Chrism during Mass.
