Celebration of Scouting recognizes
82 boy and girl scouts with awards

Eighty-two scouts in the Oakland Diocese were honored recently at the annual "Celebration of Scouting." Scouts from Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs received their religious awards from newly appointed diocesan scout chaplain, Father Neal Clemens, who led a prayer service at the Cathedral of Christ the Light that included readings from scripture, an awards presentation and concluded with the blessing of scouts and their leaders.

The theme of the "Celebration" was "God is our Motivator!" Father Clemens spoke to the scouts about how God is at the center of their lives, motivating them each day to live fully as followers of Jesus.

In addition to the religious awards, the "Pillars of Faith Award" was presented to two scouts. This award is given to a girl or boy who previously completed all four religious recognition awards during his or her years as a scout. The awardees were: Joshua Hughes, Christ the King Parish and Ryan Sanchez, St. Joseph Parish, Pinole.

Scouts earn Catholic religious awards for their own age groups by completing requirements and service projects that explore the relationships between their faith and their daily lives as scouts. Awards are available for both boy scouts and for girl scouts at each age and scouts work with their own parents/guardians or with a scout religious awards counselor in completing the age-appropriate requirements.

In addition to the "Celebration of Scouting," many scouts in the diocese are honored each year in their own parishes by attending Mass as scouts on Scout Sunday. The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday on or before Scout Anniversary Day, Feb. 8, as Scout Sunday. This year, Boy Scout Sunday was on Feb. 8. Girl Scouts USA designates Girl Scout Sunday to begin Girl Scout Week. This year, Girl Scout Sunday will be on March 8.

The Oakland Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting through the CYO Office offers programs for scouts of Catholic faith. For more information about Catholic scout programs in the diocese visit the website; www.oakdiocesescouts.org or contact CYO at 510-893-5154.
