| African American History Month
at St. Patrick Church in Oakland
Voices from the Community is the theme of the African American History Month celebrations at Oakland's St. Patrick Parish.
Guest speakers will offer reflections on the celebration of Black History Month at Sunday masses, and Rev. George Quickley, St. Patrick's pastor, will be the celebrant and homilist.
All of the guest speakers are community activists, who will give their perspective on various issues in our African American community: youth violence, economic disparities, education and race, Father Quickley said.
The guest speaker for the Feb. 15 Mass is Rev. Gregory Hunter, Olivet Institutional Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland. Music will be provided by the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church Choir.
Rev. Adam DeLeon, SJ, will be the guest speaker at the Feb. 22 Mass. Father DeLeon is from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. Oakland's St. Benedict Children's Choir will sing.
Earlier this month, on Feb. 1 Rev. Demorea Evans of Word Assembly Church in Oakland was the guest speaker and the Rev. Damita Davis-Howard of First Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Oakland was the guest speaker at the Feb. 8 Mass.
