Respect for Life

Birthright of San Lorenzo offers 'the alternative'

Respect Life month is a very important time for Birthright of San Lorenzo to spread the word about who we are and what we do.

I am often asked, "What is Birthright?" And my answer starts with; it is a nonprofit crisis pregnancy center for women who need support ... and then I notice the person's eyes dropping; then I think to myself, I must think of a better introduction to keep their attention so they will listen to our exciting story. Then I realize, it isn't my spiel that is a turnoff but the heavy guilt carried by people affected by abortion.

The conversation often turns around to how they have either been affected or suffered as the result of an abortion either directly or indirectly.

How I wish they would have known about Birthright. We are "the alternative." We offer free pregnancy tests, encourage, counsel and offer loving and friendly support to the men and women who seek us out, working with them up to the time of delivery and sometimes even beyond. We give housing, food and medical referrals.

So often we will see a woman who is pregnant and scared with a feeling of no where to turn. Birthright volunteers provide the "turn" giving her the support necessary to carry her baby to term.

Birthright was started by a mother herself, Louise Summerhill. She conceived of the idea to offer counsel and positive aid to women in crisis pregnancy to help them carry their baby to term. She believed that if even just one life was saved, and one girl saved from the lifelong consequences of having an abortion, then it was worth any amount of time and energy.

Birthright was conceived in love and born Oct. 15, 1968.

God bless Louise and all the volunteers that have followed in her footsteps.

We at the San Lorenzo Birthright are all members of this family. We need your help by letting the women and men know we are here to lend that loving support so desperately needed by these moms to be and their unborn babies.

I have found wearing a lapel pin, which we give out at events, is a perfect conversation starter about Birthright. By seeing this pin, which represents a baby's perfectly formed feet at 10 weeks, the conversation goes to how quickly babies grow in the womb.

Please stop by our office at 1048 Grant Ave., San Lorenzo and get a lapel pin to wear to help us spread the word.

You can call us at 510-481-9677 and talk with a volunteer about ways you can become part of our family too.
