Pro-life youth to gather in San Francisco

There's a discount in numbers. Cheaper by the dozen has been replaced by cheaper by the 15.

Maria H. Lewis

That's the message organizers of the upcoming NorCal Pro-Life Youth Conference are spreading to the five Northern California dioceses, as they prepare for their second annual gathering, which will be held Sept. 26 and 27 at St. Anne of the Sunset Church in San Francisco.

Maria H. Lewis, founder of the youth-led Pro-Lifers of the Mystical Rose, is seeking to enlist a liaison in each parish, with a goal of each parish sending 15 young people to the event.

Lewis, a parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Brentwood, is offering a discount to attendees. While the registration fee is $40 for an individual, it is $350 for a group of 15, she said. In addition to the discount, parish liaisons who bring the most participants will be eligible for prizes, including a trip to the March for Life in Washington, D.C., she said.

Among the speakers joining Lewis at the conference are Rev. Walter Hoye of Issues4Life; Joe Langfeld of the Human Life Alliance; and Patricia Sandoval, who will offer testimony.

Lewis said among the featured events will be a live ultrasound. A pregnant woman will be behind a screen, while the image of her unborn child is projected to the audience.

Lewis, the eldest of six children, has witnessed ultrasounds of her siblings. But for many of the young people in the pro-life movement, she said, this will be a first.

"If they actually see that baby, moving arms and legs, it will be much more powerful than any talk," Lewis said.

One of the goals of the conference, which will also feature a pro-life Christian band, is that the young people will learn that they are part of a larger movement, Lewis said.
