Annual Eighth Grade Mass set

Even though summer vacation has barely begun, it's already time to think about back to school.

Eighth-grade classes at schools in the Oakland diocese will have the opportunity to visit the Cathedral of Christ the Light on Sept. 9 for the annual Mass and speaker.

Classes will arrive at the cathedral at 9:20 a.m., and participate in games on the plaza before hearing motivational speaker and singer-songwriter Paul J. Kim at 10:15 a.m.

Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, will celebrate Mass at 12:10 p.m. Last year's homily for the eighth-grader Mass was illustrated with a remote-controlled model airplane deployed in the cathedral.

After the students eat lunch on the plaza, they will be able to take tours of the cathedral before departing.

Early registration is advised. The cost is $7 per student, which includes a bottle of water and morning snack. For more information and to RSVP, by Aug. 15, visit www.eastbaycatholicyouth.com.
