St. Paul celebrates 150 years

The bishop was swamped as many people sought his blessing.

St. Paul Church in San Pablo was filled to overflowing June 29 as the parish ended a celebration of its 150th anniversary.

St. Paul is one of the oldest parishes in the Diocese of Oakland, established in 1864 as a mission of Old St. Mary's Church in Oakland. It became a parish with a resident pastor in 1869.

For the 150th, the parish developed a history and commemorative mugs, held a dinner at Hs Lordship's restaurant in Berkeley, and followed the celebration Mass, on the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul, with a reception in a large tent on the elementary school playground.

St. Paul is staffed by members of the Conventual Franciscan order. Reflecting the diversity of the Church and the diocese, there are many ethnic groups represented at St. Paul. One side of the church is devoted to a koi pond and memorial setting for the Vietnamese martyrs.
