Energizing St. Vincent de Paul
St. Vincent de Paul of Contra Costa County Executive Director Melanie Anguay accepts a $10,000 grant from Contra Costa County Supervisor Federal Glover. The grant, funded by GenOn Energy and Calpine, energy companies with plants in the Pittsburg/Bay Point area, will help fund safety net programs administered by St. Vincent de Paul for more than 200,000 people in Contra Costa County. "This is a great example of partnerships between local businesses and community agencies that I encourage. Giving back to the community is good business," Supervisor Glover said. Among the services provided are emergency food pantries, daily hot meals for about 200 people at a Free Dining Room and medical care for the uninsured at the RotaCare Pittsburg Free Medical Clinic at St. Vincent de Paul, as well as workforce development and employment training.

A smiling FACE
Some of the children who attended the gala for Family Aid - Catholic Education gather around Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, at the May 3 event, which was held at the Blackhawk Automotive Museum in Danville. FACE provides tuition assistance to low-income families who wish to send their children to Catholic school. Living up to its theme, "The FACE of the Future," net proceeds of the gala — $475,000 — will assist in funding more than 700 students in the 2014-15 school year. In the 2013-14 year, 684 students received FACE grants. An elementary education FACE grant provides $1,750 in assistance, the grant for secondary education is $3,050. More gala photos, as well as information about the program, are available at www.faceofoakland.org.
