Pupils display their know-how at diocesan science fair

Seventh- and eighth-graders from more than 35 schools in the Diocese of Oakland brought their projects to St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in February to compete in the fifth annual Science Fair.

Judges from Bay Area college and university science departments, as well as representatives from industry, selected winners in five categories: Behavioral Sciences; Biological Science; Environmental Sciences; Technology; Engineering and Math; and Physical Sciences.

Winners, who have the opportunity to compete in the Alameda County Science and Engineering Fair or the San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair, are:

Behavioral Sciences

Grand Champion: Melina Pena, Seventh Grade, St. Paul, San Pablo, "Illusion Confusion."

Finalists: Brendan Walsh, Seventh Grade, Corpus Christi, Piedmont; Joshua Bernaldo, Eighth Grade, St. Leander, San Leandro; Chloe Grant, Eighth Grade, St. John the Baptist, El Cerrito; Meaghan Hohman , Seventh Grade, St. Perpetua, Lafayette.

Biological Science

Grand champion: Christina Pirrotta, Eighth Grade, St. Joseph Elementary School, Alameda, "Catalase Activity."
