Catholic scouts and their families gathered at the Cathedral of Christ the Light for the annual "Celebration of Scouting," honoring members of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, along with their leaders.

Eighty-three young people in scout programs in the Diocese of Oakland received their religious awards. Rev. Kenneth Nobrega, diocesan scout chaplain and vocation director, led the prayer service that included presentation of scout religious awards and a special blessing of scouts and scout leaders.

Rev. Richard Mangini, pastor of St. Bonaventure parish, Concord, was recognized as receiving a national recognition, the St. George Adult Recognition Award. The St. George award is presented annually to an adult who has given outstanding support to youth in Boy Scout programs. The scout units from Father Mangini's parish nominated him for the award for outstanding support of scouts at St. Bonaventure, stating that "over the years, he has made a point of referring to the scouts from St. Bonaventure as his scouts and he is their pastor. As scouting moves into this century, he is in firm support of the values that scout programs contribute to the young men and women of our parish community." Father Mangini was unable to attend the celebration and the award was presented to him at the parish Scout Sunday celebration.

A new award for the Diocese of Oakland presented at the celebration was the Pillars of Faith award. The award is given to a girl or boy who previously completed all four religious recognition awards during his or her years as a scout. The awardees were: Caitlyn Oliver-Brown, St. Joseph, Fremont; Brian Roberts, St. Agnes, Concord; Collin Tittel, St. Bonaventure, Concord; and James Kraynik, St. Joseph, Pinole.

Scouts earn Catholic religious awards for their age group by completing requirements and service projects that explore the relationships between their faith and their daily lives as scouts. There are awards for both Boy Scouts and for Girl scouts at each age level and are earned by completing age-appropriate requirements with either a parent/guardian or with a scout religious awards counselor.

In addition to the Celebration of Scouting on Feb. 8, many scouts in the diocese attended Mass in their parishes on Feb. 2 in observance of Boy Scout Sunday. Each year, Girl Scouts USA designates Girl Scout Sunday to begin Girl Scout Week. This year, Girl Scout Sunday is on March 9.

The Oakland Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting through the CYO Office offers programs for scouts of Catholic faith. For more information about Catholic scout programs in the diocese visit the website; www.oakdiocesescouts.org or dial the CYO at 510-893-5154.
