CCEB to offer free tax preparation

Catholic Charities of the East Bay provides low- to moderate-income families and individuals, earning less than $53,000 a year, with free tax return preparation.

For the last nine years Catholic Charities has been a member of the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Program led by the United Way of the Bay Area. It is one of more than 212 free tax sites in the Bay Area. Its IRS-trained and certified volunteer tax preparers help individuals and families claim their maximum benefits and refunds. It also ensures eligible taxpayers claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can amount to as much as $5,891 per family.

During the 2013 tax season, CCEB helped to prepare 916 tax returns and put more than $1,392,944 in total refunds back in the pockets of Bay Area families and individuals.

There are hundreds of partner community organizations and other free tax preparation providers, such as Tax-Aid and AARP Tax-Aide to process 60,000 tax returns each year.

This year, the CCEB VITA Program will again offer self-preparation. This gives taxpayers the opportunity to have hands-on experience and it empowers them to know that this process is something that they can do on their own.

CCEB will offer this service at its offices in Oakland, Concord and Richmond through April 12. In Concord, 3540 Chestnut Ave., 925-825-3099 call for hours and appointments; 2369 Barrett Ave., Richmond, walk-ins only, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays; and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, walk-ins only, at 433 Jefferson St., Oakland.
