Pilgrims from all over the world join in a procession of the Blessed Sacrament.
REV. GEORGE MOCKEL/THE CATHOLIC VOICE

May 5, 2013:
‘Do this in memory of Me’

Although Lourdes is a shrine dedicated to Mary, we know all authentic devotion to Mary leads to Christ. And so celebration of the Eucharist and devotion to the Eucharist is a central focus of activities here.
Rev. George Mockel

Today we celebrated Mass in the Grotto. Several thousand Americans joined Cardinal Dolan of New York in the celebration. Later in the day we joined pilgrims from all over the world in a procession of the Blessed Sacrament. All gathered on the great plaza in front of the Rosary Basilica for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the blessing of the sick with the Blessed Sacrament and ending with Benediction in the Pius X underground Basilica.

On this day dedicated to the Eucharist our Lord's words at the Last Supper came to my mind. Recall what he said after changing bread and wine into his body and blood: "Do this in memory of Me."

But he also said those words after he washed the feet of the disciples. Service and Eucharist are intimately linked. They were linked by our Lord at the Last Supper and they should be linked in our daily lives as well.

At Lourdes this truth is made manifest. The Order of Malta members refer to the sick as "our lords." Service and care of the sick is a central focus of our pilgrimage. They afford us the privilege to serve in the name of Christ and to respond to his invitation to "do this in memory of Me." We are so grateful to them.

(Father Mockel is vicar general of the Diocese of Oakland.)
