May 3, 2013:
Will we let God change us

Lourdes is a place of pilgrimage. In its simplest terms it is a place we go to find God.
Rev. George Mockel

One of the Chaplains on this pilgrimage commented that the shortest part of the trip is the 11 hours we traveled to get here. The longest is the distance we must some times travel to change ourselves. It does not matter how far we come or how long it takes us.

What truly matters is how far we will let God go to change us, the distance we are willing to let God into our hearts. Bernadette's life was changed so profoundly after the apparitions that nothing was the same for her again.

All of us have grace filled opportunities in our lives that provide an opportunity for us to experience the profound kind of change that allows God to come into our lives for the first time or again in a deeper way. We do not always recognize them as such when they occur, but from the vantage point of time, prayer and reflection, what seemed to be a burden really came to be a gift and a grace filled event.

(Father Mockel is vicar general of the Diocese of Oakland.)
