One of the four Advent calendars that have been created by Randy and Chris Dixon for their parish, Newman Hall/Holy Spirit in Berkeley, will be on display at the Crèche Festival, Dec. 13-15, at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland. Details at http://ctlcathedral.org/visit/creche13.

Advent calendar to be displayed at Crèche Festival

You could say they do Advent in a big way at Newman Hall/Holy Spirit Parish in Berkeley.

An Advent calendar, 15 feet deep and 15 feet wide, will hang behind the choir in the concrete-walled sanctuary. Each day, a three-foot-square numbered patch will be removed, revealing a piece of the artwork beneath.

The patchwork beauty is the work of artists Randy and Chris Dixon, who bring their considerable talent to the project. In their 30 years in the parish, they have created four such calendars. With four in the rotation, a freshman at Cal, for example, will not see a repeat before graduation.

Randy Dixon is the designer and patternmaker. After the full-size patterns are used to cut fabric, mostly cottons, Christine creates the finished product on her White sewing machine, spending most of the summer putting all of those pieces together.

While each Advent calendar depicts the Nativity, each one is stylistically different. One will be on display at the annual Crèche Festival at the Cathedral of Christ the Light from Dec. 13 to 15.

Another of the Dixons' calendars will go up at Newman Hall before the 5 p.m. Mass on Nov. 30, to mark the beginning of Advent 2013.
