CYO cross country meet draws 800 runners

The CYO Cross Country Diocesan Meet concluded the Oakland Diocese CYO cross country season. The Oct. 18 meet at Joaquin Miller Park in the Oakland hills featured 800 runners. This was the final meet in a season that featured five weeks of meets in parks with grass fields and wooded areas, and even included a run at a beach. Thirty-four Catholic schools and parishes entered teams of girls and boys, eighth grade and under, in the one-mile races.

Individual race winners, with times over the mile course, were:

3rd-5th Grade Girls: 1st – Isabelle Loaisiga, Holy Spirit, Fremont, 7:11.1

2nd – Samantha Melin, St. John Vianney, Walnut Creek, 7:19.8

3rd – Madeline Liem, Holy Rosary, Antioch, 7:22.1

3rd-5th Grade Boys: 1st – Adam Burkes, St. John Vianney, Walnut Creek, 6:50.6

2nd – Nicholas Ortiz, St. Joseph, Alameda, 6:54.0

3rd – Gregory Cook, Assumption, San Leandro, 6:54.4

6th-8th Grade Girls:1st – Madalyne Coney, St. Isidore, Danville, 6:32.2

2nd – Audrey Coney, St. Isidore, Danville, 6:39.4

3rd– Emma Tavella, St. Joan of Arc, San Ramon, 6:42.8

6th-8th Grade Boys:1st – Jeremy Lahr, St. Isidore, Danville, 6:07.6

2nd–Joey Fraticelli, Corpus Christi, Fremont, 6:13.8

3rd – Denny Rich, Corpus Christi, Fremont, 6:18.3

This year, a separate half-mile run for boys and girls in kindergarten through second grade was included. Individual awards were presented but no team awards.

K-2nd Grade Girls: 1st – Riley McDermott, St. Theresa, Oakland, 3:40.3

2nd – Rachel Burkes, St. John Vianney, Walnut Creek, 4:17.3

3rd – Sammie Lou Edgren, St. Joan of Arc, San Ramon, 4:18.3

K-2nd Grade Boys: 1st – Leighton Sproul, School of the Madeleine, Berkeley, 3:33.4

2nd – Yasha Gupta, St. Anne, Union City, 3:45.0

3rd – Sidharth Sharma, St. Anne, Union City, 3:53.0

Team Award winners, with overall points were:

3rd-5th Grade Girls: 1st – Holy Rosary, Antioch (32)

2nd – Corpus Christi, Piedmont (37)

3rd – Holy Spirit, Fremont (54)

3rd-5th Grade Boys: 1st – St. John Vianney, Walnut Creek (14)

2nd – St. Joseph, Alameda (16)

3rd – Assumption, San Leandro (26)

6th-8th Grade Girls: 1st – St. Isidore, Danville (11)

2nd – St. Joan of Arc, San Ramon (12)

3rd – Assumption, San Leandro (52)

6th-8th Grade Boys: 1st – Corpus Christi, Fremont (9)

2nd – Christ the King, Pleasant Hill (26)

3rd – St. Mary, Walnut Creek (47)

Cross country is an exciting and growing sport in CYO. Excited runners, cheering families and supportive coaches are at each of the meets.
