De La Salle honors distinguished alumnus

De La Salle High School of Concord named its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and named new inductees to its Athletic Hall of Fame. Six student-athletes, two teams, one faithful supporter of Spartan athletics, and the Alumnus of the Year will all be recognized at the "Evening of Honor" on Oct. 27 at the school. The event is open to the public, and registration is open online at www.dlshs.org.

Thomas A. Baldacci '77 is the Alumnus of the Year for 2013. A principal of the Castle Companies and Baldacci Vineyards, Baldacci, a University of California, Berkeley graduate, has been an active and devoted De La Salle alumnus for decades, and has sent his four sons through De La Salle as well. Youngest son Matthew has graduated with the class of 2013. Baldacci embodies the principles taught at De La Salle, and he and his family are an invaluable part of the school community.

The Hall of Fame inductees are: Mark Viera '71: Outstanding in both basketball and track and field, Viera was Athlete of the Year in 1971. Pat Oswald '83, is recognized for his achievements in baseball, football and wrestling, and was Athlete of the Year in 1983. Antonio Vernon '86, excelled in football and baseball, and was Athlete of the Year in 1986. Doug Brien '89, played soccer and football, and went on to a stellar career at UC-Berkeley and in the NFL as a placekicker, winning the Super Bowl with the 49ers in 1995. Tom Coughlan '97, was a great water polo player for the Spartans, and went on to be an All-American at UC Santa Barbara and to play and coach internationally. The 1989 Soccer Team won the school's first North Coast Section championship in soccer. The 2000 team won the school's first California state title in basketball. Twenty-five years ago builder Ken Hofmann became acquainted with De La Salle High School through its football program, and ever since then has been a devoted and generous supporter of the school, not only of its athletics but of the school's educational mission as a whole, of which the co-curricular programs in sports are a special and valuable part.

The "Evening of Honor" begins at 3 p.m., with reception immediately following, in the Hofmann Student Center at De La Salle High School, 1130 Winton Drive, Concord.
