Two-day grief ministry workshop

A two-day workshop to train parish teams to provide comfort and support to those who have experienced a loss will be conducted Oct. 25 and 26 in San Pablo.

The workshop, sponsored by Holy Angels/St. Joseph Cemetery, will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the cemetery.

Sandy Heinisch, grief minister trainer for the Diocese of Oakland and grief counselor with Contra Costa Crisis Center, will conduct the workshop.

It's time well spent, said Suzanne Tchan-Grosse, who coordinates the grief ministry at St. Joseph Parish in Pinole. She attended the grief ministry workshop more than a year ago. Since then, she said, "I have been attending funerals and sending cards."

A dozen people in her parish are interested in helping comfort their parishioners who have suffered a loss. But so far she is the only one who has the training. "A lot of people think, 'I can't do that," or 'I'd cry' or 'I'm too emotional,'" she said.

The training will make the difference, she said. "They have to be trained so they know what to expect," she said.

Cost of the workshop is $35 per person. Participants should bring lunch each day. Registration is available through the grief ministry of St. Joseph Parish in Pinole. RSVP to Suzanne Tchan-Grosse, 510-384-1398 or email SuSutgsr@yahoo.com. Please put St Jo Grief Training in the subject line.
