Celebrate 5's spirit of aloha
As part of the Celebrate 5 events during the month of September, the Cathedral Shop will offer a 20 percent discount to customers wearing Aloha apparel Sept. 22-28. Getting in the Aloha spirit is Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, wearing a Reyn Spooner limited-edition shirt that was commissioned to honor the Hawaiian saints, St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. Their images appear in block prints, along with their chapel and members of their Molokai community. Musical guests will perform free concerts on the Cathedral Plaza. Hawaiian slack key guitarist Patrick Landeza, who in May became the first mainland-born artist to win a Na Hoku Hanohano award, Hawaiian music's most prestigious award, is scheduled to appear from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 25. City Lights Café will offer specials on Wednesdays, with seasonings reflecting the available offerings from the adjacent Farmers Market. Also on the calendar is the first blessing of the animals on the plaza, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. Father Ray Sacca, cathedral rector, will bless animals. "We welcome all well-behaved, socialized animals on leashes or in carriers and their human companions," said an announcement from the cathedral shop. Celebrate 5 commemorates five years since the cathedral dedication in 2008.
