Families invited to celebrate
new pastor


Families are invited to attend the installation of the Rev. George Alengadan, SDB as the new pastor of St. Joseph Basilica in Alameda on Aug. 31 by Oakland Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ.

A potluck dinner in the Kelly Gym will follow the
5 p.m. Mass.

This is an opportunity to meet the new bishop, the new pastor and the Rev. Thi Van Hoang, the new associate pastor of St. Joseph Basilica,
1109 Chestnut St., Alameda.

The parish community is planning an international potluck, and families are invited to make food they would like to share with others. Food can be brought to the gym before 6 p.m., when the dinner begins. There will be entertainment by local ethnic dance troupes. For more information, please contact the parish at 510-995-9420.

RETREATS

20th annual women's retreat at Presentation Center, Los Gatos sponsored by St. Bonaventure Women's Christian Fellowship Team. Women of all ages are invited to spend a weekend building their relationship with Christ in fellowship with other Catholic women. Rev. Michael Renninger, of Richmond, Virginia, will be the retreat master teaching around the theme: "O Woman of Great Faith." Matt. 15:28. Community Action Poverty Simulation. 9 a.m. to noon in the parish hall at Holy Spirit Church, 37588 Fremont Blvd., Fremont. Participants role-play the lives of low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their self-sufficiency on Social Security. The task of each family is to provide food, shelter and other basic necessities during the simulation while interacting with various community resources staffed by low-income volunteers. At the end, ways participants can advocate, donate, and volunteer will be discussed. Co-sponsored by Ignatian Companions and JustFaith Ministries in collaboration with Holy Spirit Catholic Parish and StepUp Silicon Valley Campaign to Cut Poverty.
