• Born July 13, 1954, Salt Lake City, Utah

• Baptized at Mission Dolores, San Francisco, by then-Father John S. Cummins

• Attended Our Lady of Loretto School in Novato and St. Theresa School in South Lake Tahoe, 1960-1965

• Graduated from St. John Vianney School, Rancho Cordova, 1968

• After graduation from Saint Pius X Preparatory School in Galt, California, entered the Society of Jesus, 1973

• BA in Philosophy and History, Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington, 1978

• Studied theology at Regis College at the University of Toronto in Canada, 1982 to 1985

• Ordained a priest for the Society of Jesus, June 8, 1985

• Missionary in Apia, Western Samoa, 1985-1987

• Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, 1989

• Assistant Professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University, 1990-1991

• Enters Naval Reserve as a chaplain, 1991

• Tutor and Chaplain at the University of Oxford in England and bursar of the Jesuit community at Campion Hall, 1992-1998

• Director of the School of Pastoral Leadership for the Archdiocese of San Francisco with residence at St. Agnes Parish, and then, at the Jesuit community at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, 1998-2001

• Professor and spiritual director at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, 2002-2010

• Made final vows, 2005

• Director of Spiritual Formation at Saint John's Seminary in Brighton in the Archdiocese of Boston, 2010-2013

• Promoted to captain, US Naval Reserve, 2012

• Appointed bishop of the Diocese of Oakland, May 3, 2013

• Consecrated to the episcopate and installed, May 25, 2013
