Why people came out

An overflow crowd filled the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland for Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ,'s ordination May 25. Hundreds of people who couldn't get into the cathedral filled the plaza to watch the service on a giant-screen. Staff writer Carrie McClish asked folks why they came.

"We are here to support and welcome the bishop. We heard that he is also traditional, a supporter of the Latin Mass."
Emy Nilsen

"He needs all of our prayers."

"I was invited by my friend, Sandra. I have never been in something like this. This is the kind of event I would normally watch on TV. I felt that it was important to be here."

Myrna Bruno

Epiphany Parish in San Francisco, with Sandra Martinez of the Oakland diocese

"I am so happy, and feel grateful to be here. I want to pray for him."

Tam Tran

"I wanted to experience an ordination because I've never seen one before. Being 55, it's time to experience that."

Elisa Quinto-Smith

"I think this is a first for Oakland, never has there been a priest ordained and installed as a bishop. It is also the first time a Jesuit pope appointed a Jesuit priest. I think it is a great, joyful day for the Diocese of Oakland. He's only 58; hopefully he will be here for a while."

Melba Vidal
Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Oakland

"It is the first time for us to see a bishop ordained. This is a big experience for us."

Susan and William Sterling
St. John the Baptist Parish, San Lorenzo

"This is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It will probably be the last time that I will have to see something like this. It is such a glorious occasion."

Wallita Sykes-Bush
St. Benedict Parish, Oakland

"I went to the installations of Bishops Vigneron and Cordileone and I wanted to be here for Bishop Barber."

Donalyn Deeds
St. Edward Parish, Newark

"I'm 75 years old and I have never before been present at an event that is as spiritual as this. This is also history. Being a witness to an event like this is one of my dreams."

Bettye Burns

"I am here to welcome the new bishop and give our students the opportunity to experience the liturgy, spirituality of this important day."
