Celebrating a silver anniversary

In its 92 years, Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Oakland has seen just three pastors. Parishioners gathered at the 11 a.m. Mass June 23 to celebrate Father Seamus Genovese's 25 years as pastor. Acknowledging that treatment of cancer had left him weakened, he celebrated the anniversary Mass. "As grateful as I am to be standing here before you, I feel it is an honor and privilege to celebrate this Eucharist."

In his homily, Father Genovese said, "I have lived my whole life with the desire to help others in their journey. But I have always realized that I have little else to offer than my own, the journey I am making myself. How can I announce joy, peace, forgiveness and reconciliation unless they are part of my own flesh and blood? I have always wanted to be a good shepherd for others but I have known always, too, that the good shepherds lay down their life for their friends. For the past 25 years I have laid down my life for you. You have no idea what a gift it is to be a priest. … I pray that in some small way I have helped you along the journey. I hope in some small way that I have given you insight to see the beauty of life. I hope in some small way I have given you hope."

St. Anne plans 40th anniversary celebration

St. Anne Parish, 32223 Cabello St., Union City, will celebrate its 40th anniversary as a parish community with a festival July 27-28. Many activities before and after the parish festival were also planned — a '70s theme dinner/dance, rock concert and a Mass with Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, on Aug. 10.

"One of the highlights of our 40th anniversary celebrations is our Family Pictorial Directory," said Rev. Geoffrey Baraan, pastor. The first dates for picture taking will be July 17-21. Commemorative T-shirts are also on sale.

"I have been here for seven years as pastor and I would say that being here is very rewarding. We have come to celebrate and tell stories of our faith. We celebrated by singing and dancing. We laughed and cried. We shared our vision of hope, reconciliation, of forgiveness and of being one in the spirit of unity and peace," said Father Baraan.
