THE VATICAN

First painted depictions of Native Americans
This is a detail view of what a Vatican Museum official believes may be the first painted depictions of Native Americans. The male figures appear just below the depiction of the risen Christ in Pintoricchio's fresco of "The Resurrection" in the Vatican's Borgia Apartments. The paintings were completed in 1494 and the director of the museums, Antonio Paolucci, said the Spanish Pope Alexander VI who commissioned them "was interested in the New World" and would have known about its discovery by Christopher Columbus.
