A happy FACE
FACE — Family Aid — Catholic Education — celebrated its 35th year with a Spring Gala to remember. The 370 guests at Scott's Seafood Grill at Oakland's Jack London Square enjoyed an evening of fine dining, fellowship and some competitive bidding, with proceeds going to support tuition assistance. Archbishop Alex J. Brunett, apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Oakland, above left, joins master of ceremonies Steve Burke, outgoing chairman of the board of the organization and the evening's master of ceremonies, in helping the crowd get going. Highlights of the evening included appearances by three students who have received FACE grants. Diego Barcena, below left, an eighth-grader at St. Elizabeth Elementary School in Oakland, prefaced his remarks with, "I used to be shy, but after receiving a FACE grant and being encouraged at school, I am not shy anymore." Destiney Knuckles, below center, a ninth-grader at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda, sang a gospel song for the appreciative audience. Evamaria Castaneda, below right, a senior at Holy Names High School in Oakland, told how FACE has impacted her education. As the last "Sold!" echoed across the room, FACE had raised $450,000.
