Meet the five: Page 12
They range in age from 26 to 53.

Deacons Thi Van Hoang, Leonard Marrujo, H. David Mendoza-Vela and Benedict Pradit Wonganant have been studying at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park. Since their ordination to the transitional diaconate last September, they have, in addition to their studies, been serving in parishes on weekends.

Another, Deacon Brandon Macadaeg, has been studying at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. His reflections on the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis have appeared recently in The Catholic Voice.

They will be ordained to the priesthood by the Most Rev. Alex J. Brunett, apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Oakland, at 10 a.m. May 18 at the Cathedral of Christ the Light, 2121 Harrison St., Oakland.

Among the honored guests at the ordination will be the Most Rev. Elias Bolanos, bishop of Zacatecoluca, El Salvador, and the Most Rev. Gregorio Rosa Chavez, auxiliary bishop of San Salvador.

Rev. Mr. Mendoza-Vela began his journey to the priesthood in Bishop Bolanos' diocese. The bishop sent Rev. Mr. Mendoza-Vela to the Diocese of Oakland in 2008.

Each of the new priests will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving. Some will celebrate more than one, and in more than one language.

Each will receive his first assignment as a priest from Archbishop Brunett.
